During the Monsoon, rainwater from the nearby hills fills up a lake(often called Periya Eri) that is used to irrigate the surrounding agricultural lands. Thuraiyur is one of the very few towns in Tamilnadu to have a high grade water management system in place. jayaram polytechnic collegeare also located at 8 km away from thuraiyur. Apart from the above colleges, Imayam and Sudharsana colleges are located within 5 km distance. Nehru College was started by a local businessman who was a great visionary and philanthropist. Jayaram engineering college and Nehru memorial college are located 7 km and 12 km from Thuraiyur respectively. This school is also renowned for encouraging students towards sports.This school got lot of awards for sports,NCC,NSS,JRC and other activity. Majority of the existing population of Thuraiyur and the neighbouring villages are alumni of this institute. Kamaraj, the famous Tamil politician of the 1960s, during his initiative to educate the unprevileged and downtrodden Tamil people, funded Thuraiyur Zamindhars to start this school. Zamindhar Hr Sec School' is a well known institute. Sowdambika Matriculation Hr Sec School, was established in 1985. Also Thuraiyur is famous for its Nandhikeshuvarar aalayam, (a shiva temple) and a Vishnu temple which were built many centuries before. Gandhiya Manya Elementary School) is located in this village, many have graduated degrees from colleges. Hundreds of devotees take part in the Girivalam procession around the Perumalmalai hillock on all full-moon days. The kings are later named as Karuppannar and Veeraswamy and they are worshiped in the temple. This temple is said to be constructed by the grandson of Karikala Chozhan. Prasanna Venkatasalapathi temple lies at the top of Perumalmalai that lies 960 feet above ground level in Pachamalai hills, 3 km from Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district.A fine BT road is provided in that hill, so that cars and light vehicles can reach the top of the hill without any trouble.From the hill top. Thuraiyur is also famous for the temple Prasanna Venkatasalapathi, situated in the Thuraiyur-Perambalur road. But still, handloom is one of the main occupation among the people of Thuraiyur. With the advancement of powerlooms, it has lost its significance. Thuraiyur's economy has witnessed a significant role played by the handloom manufacturers. But now, the indigenous economy of this town is based on agricultural products and jewellery. Paddy and Cholam are the predominant crops. Two decades ago agriculture was the main occupation of people.
